The operator panel of an inverter usually consists of a line of LEDs; some high-end models use LCD displays but still only show one physical quantity at a time, with important numeric characters enlarged for clarity. Although inverters typically display the set frequency value upon leaving the factory, human interference during operation may cause them to display other parameters, such as maximum output torque percentage limit, acceleration time, etc.
Once the inverter is set to display other status parameters, even if the potentiometer for frequency setting has been turned to zero and the set frequency is indeed zero, the panel will not reflect this change because it is not displaying the frequency value.
Therefore, at this point, we should refer to the inverter's operation manual first and study the meaning of the current displayed status parameter. If the value is shown on an LCD panel, there is often a unit such as Hz, A, or V on the right side. Naturally, Hz corresponds to frequency, which can be divided into two types: actual frequency and set frequency.
Potentiometer Signal Issues.
A potentiometer is essentially a variable resistor. The specifications commonly used with inverters are typically 0–2.2kΩ, 0–4.7kΩ, 0–10kΩ, etc. By connecting fixed-resistance pins at both ends to a DC voltage (such as 0–10V or 5V), rotating the potentiometer adjusts the center tap to output a continuously varying voltage from 0–10VDC (or 5VDC). This voltage is fed into the analog input port of the inverter, where the main board converts it through analog-to-digital conversion and quantization to correspond to a 0–50Hz internal relationship within the inverter.
For example, 5V corresponds to 25.00Hz, and 0V corresponds to 0.00Hz. As long as there is no abnormality, this relationship remains linear. However, due to poor environmental conditions where the inverter is installed, there may be strong electrical interference. Since the inverter is a high-frequency, high-voltage output power source, harmonic interference on the analog signal of the potentiometer could result in a non-zero frequency value being set, even when adjusted to the minimum position. While rare, this situation can occur and can be resolved by using shielded cables.
Potentiometers are contact-based components and may oxidize or even break after long-term use. Therefore, the output voltage from the center tap may become unstable. You might turn it to the minimum position, but the output voltage may not necessarily be 0V. This issue is easy to identify—simply measure the output voltage of the center tap of the potentiometer with a multimeter to detect any problems.
Port and Parameter Issues.
In the hardware circuitry, some analog input ports of inverters use resistors, capacitors, or operational amplifiers for functions like amplification and filtering. These components may age or get damaged over time, causing analog reading deviations. Such cases are difficult to detect and even harder to fix without professional assistance from industrial control repair companies.
Some analog inputs of inverters can be simply programmed internally—for instance, an offset can be set. Although the offset is usually set to zero at the factory, someone may have changed the parameters, making the offset non-zero. Even if the potentiometer is turned to zero and the analog input is indeed zero, the actual set frequency may not be zero. This phenomenon is common in certain European-made inverters.
