Three points to note when purchasing a frequency converter

Selecting the right VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) is a skill, and finding the appropriate electrical components is even more challenging. Improper selection may lead to inverter explosion or damage, seriously affecting normal factory production. Therefore, it's essential to ensure that the electrical products sold are of high quality. Scientific and rational selection of VFDs is extremely important.

When selecting a VFD, it is recommended to first understand the type of machinery, load torque characteristics, starting torque, speed control range, static speed accuracy, and environmental requirements. Based on these conditions, you can then decide which control method and protection structure will be most suitable for your application. The term "suitable" refers to meeting the actual process and application requirements of the mechanical equipment while achieving optimal cost-performance in VFD applications.

1. Load Type and VFD Selection:

Different motor-driven loads have different requirements for VFDs: a. Fans and Pumps — the most common load types:
These have the simplest VFD requirements. In general, the VFD capacity should be equal to the motor capacity (except for compressors, deep well pumps, sand pumps, and musical fountains with rapid changes, where increased capacity is required). b. Crane-type Loads:
These loads are characterized by high impact during startup. VFDs need to have sufficient capacity margin. Additionally, when lowering heavy objects, energy feedback occurs, so a braking unit or common DC bus should be used. c. Unstable Loads:
Some loads vary between light and heavy. In such cases, the VFD capacity should be selected based on the maximum expected load. Examples include rolling mills, crushers, and mixers. d. High Inertia Loads:
Examples include centrifuges, punch presses, and rotary kilns in cement plants. These loads have high inertia, cause vibration during startup, and generate energy feedback during motor deceleration. A slightly higher capacity VFD should be used to accelerate startup and avoid vibration. A braking unit should also be added to eliminate the feedback energy.

2. Long-term Low-speed Operation:

During long-term low-speed operation, motors tend to overheat due to reduced cooling efficiency from the fan. To address this, either increase the gear reduction ratio or use a 6-pole motor so that the motor operates at a frequency closer to its rated value.

3. Installation Environment:

The installation location of the VFD must meet standard environmental requirements. Otherwise, malfunctions or shortened lifespan may occur. The distance between the VFD and the driven motor should generally be within 50 meters. If a longer distance is required, the carrier frequency should be reduced, or an output reactor (or current-limiting reactor XD1/2) should be added. Changsha Sunye Electric Co., Ltd.
