Which components of a frequency converter need to be replaced regularly?

Operators must be familiar with the basic working principles and functional characteristics of the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive), and possess fundamental electrical operation knowledge. Before inspecting or maintaining the VFD, it is essential to completely disconnect the main power supply of the equipment and wait until the "CHANG" indicator light on the VFD has fully turned off.

Daily Inspection Checklist:
Before powering up the VFD, first check the ambient temperature and humidity around the installation site. Excessively high temperatures may cause overheating alarms, and in severe cases, damage to the VFD’s power components or circuit short circuits. Excessive humidity may lead to internal short circuits within the VFD. During VFD operation, ensure that the cooling system is functioning properly, such as checking whether air vents are unobstructed and if fans produce any abnormal noise. VFDs with a higher protection rating (e.g., IP20 and above) can typically be installed openly, while those with a lower protection rating (below IP20) should generally be mounted inside an enclosure. Therefore, the heat dissipation performance of the VFD cabinet will directly affect the normal operation of the VFD. The fan rotation and presence of dust or blockages at the air intake are key points not to be overlooked during daily inspections. Also monitor whether components such as motor reactors and transformers are overheating or emitting unusual odors; check for any abnormal sounds from the VFD or motor. Monitor the current display on the VFD panel to detect excessive current or large fluctuations. Check whether the output three-phase voltage and current (U, V, W) remain balanced. The VFD consists of many electronic components. Due to the physical properties and composition of these parts, they may degrade over time, which can reduce the VFD's performance and even lead to faults. Therefore, regular replacement is necessary as part of preventive maintenance: 1. Fuses: Fuses have a rated current greater than the load current. Under normal operating conditions, their lifespan is approximately 10 years, requiring maintenance or replacement within this period.
2. Relays and contactors: After a certain number of switching cycles, contact failure may occur. These components require periodic inspection and replacement when necessary.
3. Cooling Fans: Cooling fans help dissipate heat from the semiconductor components in the main circuit, ensuring normal operation within allowable temperature limits. However, the life of a fan is limited by its bearings, typically lasting between 10,000 to 35,000 hours. If the VFD operates continuously, the fan or its bearings should be replaced every few years.
4. Timers: After several years of use, the timing accuracy of timers may significantly change. Therefore, after checking the actual timing behavior, replacement should be considered.
5. Capacitors: Large electrolytic capacitors are used in the intermediate DC link. Their performance deteriorates due to factors such as ripple current. This deterioration is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and usage conditions. Generally, capacitors have a service life of about 5 years. After a certain period, capacitor degradation accelerates rapidly. Therefore, the maximum inspection interval should be one year, and when nearing the end of their life, inspections should be conducted every six months or less. Changsha Sunye Electric Co., Ltd.
